Who do they say we are?

When Jesus arrived in the villages of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “What are people saying about who the Son of Man is?”

They replied, “Some think he is John the Baptizer, some say Elijah, some Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.”

He pressed them, “And how about you? Who do you say I am?”  (Matthew 16:13-15)

Jesus’ questions to the disciples are alive to us today in a world in which being a Christian is no longer “normal.” Who we are and what we do as followers of Jesus is often seen by the world very differently than we intend. We’ll explore what these questions mean for us and for the church today using some scenes from “Walk the Line,” the bio-pic about singer Johnny Cash.

We meet Friday, Aug. 22 @ 6:30 p.m. @ St. Luke Lutheran Church in Dublin (Rt. 313). We’ll be in the parlor, which is on the right as you come in the main entrance. We’ll start worship promptly at 7:30. It’s a pot-luck, and in addition to a main dish or side dish (dessert is covered) we need everyone to bring a beverage.

Please bring your offerings for the Quakertown Food Pantry — they are in serious need of food and/or funds to purchase food.

Weekly Meeting Summary; August 1, 2008

Matthew 13:54-58:
When Jesus finished telling these stories, he left there, returned to his hometown, and gave a lecture in the meetinghouse. He made a real hit, impressing everyone. “We had no idea he was this good!” they said. “How did he get so wise, get such ability?” But in the next breath they were cutting him down: “We’ve known him since he was a kid; he’s the carpenter’s son. We know his mother, Mary. We know his brothers James and Joseph, Simon and Judas. All his sisters live here. Who does he think he is?” They got their noses all out of joint.
But Jesus said, “A prophet is taken for granted in his hometown and his family.” He didn’t do many miracles there because of their hostile indifference.

Discussion topics included:

  • The call to witness - who will listen?
  • Why did Jesus not perform miracles to prove himself in his hometown?
  • What is prayer?
  • Does God answer prayers?
  • Are unanswered prayers a sign of ineffective praying?
  • Does God punish?
  • Does God directly effect human events?
  • Do you believe in miracles?
  • What are miracles?
