Service Sunday Oct. 5

his Service Sunday we have two opportunities for you. It’s one of the coolest things about our community that we want to go out and offer service rather than just hold services, so come on out and join the fun. We need several folks at each location.

9am-1pm @Boyer’s Market in Quakertown = Contact Suzanne to sign up to help collect food for Quakertown Food Pantry. (kid-friendly)

9:30am-1pm @Bucks County Housing Group in Doylestown = Contact Maria to sign up to assist clients, restock shelves, etc. (teens/adults)

Sunday mornings don’t work for you? How about getting involved in this new opportunity?

Manna on Main Street needs help preparing/serving meals for hungry clients! Can you help us prepare a meal? Could be during the week, on Saturday, or whenever it works for you…as long as it’s ready by Sunday afternoon. Or, come help us serve the needy from 4pm-7pm @Manna on Main Street in Lansdale. Contact Maria and to volunteer for meal preparation, donate $ to offset the cost of the meal, or sign up to serve. (kid-friendly)

Contact Maria ASAP about this so Manna can let clients know if we’ll be there (they’re not usually open on Sundays but will if we can help out.)

The Kingdom of God is not what you think

Text: Luke 5:27-39 (MSG) (NRSV)

Friday night (9/26) we talked about how these three stories – the calling of Matthew (Levi), the confrontation with the Pharisees, and the teaching about old/new cloth and wineskins – are of a piece. Together they make a point about just how radical is the new kingdom Jesus is proclaiming. Read on and join in the discussion yourself. (more…)

Keep it simple!

1-5 Jesus now called the Twelve and gave them authority and power to deal with all the demons and cure diseases. He commissioned them to preach the news of God’s kingdom and heal the sick. He said, “Don’t load yourselves up with equipment. Keep it simple; you are the equipment. And no luxury inns—get a modest place and be content there until you leave. If you’re not welcomed, leave town. Don’t make a scene. Shrug your shoulders and move on.”

6 Commissioned, they left. They traveled from town to town telling the latest news of God, the Message, and curing people everywhere they went. (Luke 9:1-6, The Message)

Live. Serve. Grow.

The URL of our website — liveservegrow.info — may not exactly roll of the tips of your typing fingers. You might wonder why we use this address, since it doesn’t point anyone to Christians @ Large directly. Over time, it has become clear to me that this website name describes our approach to the life of faith in a simple trajectory: Live. Serve. Grow. (more…)

Sept. 12: Wineskins new and old

No one tears a piece from a new garment and sews it on an old garment; otherwise the new will be torn, and the piece from the new will not match the old.  — Luke 5:37

Friday night we will meet at Fishers at 6:30 p.m. for dinner, worship and prayer. We’ll be looking at Jesus’ parable in Luke 5:33-39 (Link) about new and old garments, and new wine and old wineskins, to see what he might be saying about our lives today as Christians in a broken world.

Please remember to bring your food offerings for the food pantry. (Please make sure food items are in date.) A children’s activity will be provided.

For directions/info call 267.377.7192 or email.

On vocation: More than just a job

At our gathering Friday night we talked about our labor — in our jobs and our callings as Christians. As another Labor Day passes, here are my notes from preparing for our discussion, some food for thought as we gear up for work and school this fall. Peace, Bob:

We tend to think of our calling in occupational terms.

We celebrate the gifts that God has given us and the ways we use them as parents and children, as neighbors and friends, as students and teachers and artists and techies.

Martin Luther affirmed that the work of our daily lives… of changing diapers and herding kids, of writing lesson plans and fixing computers and pushing papers and making copies… is all holy work.

But our true calling is more than what we do. (more…)
