What piano are you tied to?

This is a recap of the homily/scripture discussion from our Jan. 18 worship service.

So here we have two really interesting texts, but what do they have to do with each other? I think these texts are two aspects of the concept of “call.”  Paul speaks about it theoretically, on an almost cosmic level, in Romans. The calling of Jesus’ first disciples is the down and dirty reality – where the rubber meets the road. (more…)

Prayer for our new President

O God, stir up your Spirit to inspire, encourage, and sustain President Barack Obama as he assumes leadership of our nation. Grant him the wisdom to address the many challenges facing your world, and the courage to propose bold and difficult solutions. Help him to lead in ways that reflect the responsibility conferred by our nation’s wealth, might and power to shape global culture. Guide him and all of our leaders to fashion a government that works for the well being of all our your people. Use the outpouring of involvement and goodwill among Americans to infuse hope into your people, particularly those who are poor, suffering and marginalized. Amen.

Psalm 104

Listening to Psalm 104 on Pray-as-you-go this morning, I was struck by how far we have moved from a sense of awe in sreation, respect for its limits, and the fact that it is all a gift of God — not just the sun and the rain and the plants we see but the way all of it, from the cosmos to the inner workings of cells, are knit together interdependently to form an environment that allows and sustains life.

It is wonderful to listen to the promise of God’s provision. Yet there’s some dissonance, too. (more…)

Leaving our nets

Join us for our monthly community worship service this Sunday, January 18, at 10:30 a.m. at United Friends School (1018 W. Broad Street) in Quakertown.

Baptism is not just our entrance into the life of God but our daily task. St. Paul writes that in baptism we take on Christ’s death as well as his life. Martin Luther saw remembering and renewing baptism as a daily ritual. That’s great theory, but what does it mean for us? We’ll look at that question through the story of the calling of Jesus’ first disciples — Peter, Andrew, James and John.

Join us for a time of praise, engaging the story, prayer and fellowship this Sunday at 10:30 a.m. Children’s activity will be provided. Please bring an offering to cover our expenses and donate to the Quakertown Food Pantry.

Need info? Contact Bob by email.

Add your voice to the conversation

Our community is hosting an online bible discussion as part of our quest to work the words of Scripture into our lives (Matthew 7:24, the Message). The idea is that we learn from the bible and from each other’s responses to it. So we’d like to invite you to add your voice to the conversation. You can just read along with us, or add a brief comment about how the reading touches you. We’re not looking for scholarship, just for our own response to God’s word working in us. (more…)
